Trying to Get Pregnant? How Fertility Acupuncture Can Support You
Trying to get pregnant can be one of the most emotional experiences of your life. And if it's taking longer than you expected, you probably don't need anyone to tell you to relax.
You need someone who understands what you're going through and can help you figure out what to do next.
At Acupuncture Northwest in Portland, we've spent more than 20 years caring for patients, including people navigating fertility challenges. We've seen how quickly trying to conceive can take over someone's life. The tracking, the appointments, the supplements, the waiting. And the constant feeling that there must be something else you should be doing.
Whether you're trying to conceive naturally, preparing for IUI, or going through IVF, we believe fertility support should help you feel more informed and cared for—not give you another impossible checklist.
Getting Pregnant Is More Complicated Than Most People Realize
Here's something I tell patients all the time: getting pregnant is a little like playing the lottery.
Not because it's completely random, but because so many biological factors have to come together for a pregnancy to happen.
An egg needs to be released. Sperm need to reach it. Fertilization needs to occur, and the resulting embryo needs to develop and implant. Even when everything looks good, pregnancy isn't guaranteed in any given cycle.
And here's something people often find surprisingly reassuring: you can't know the developmental potential of the egg released in a particular month just by tracking ovulation.
You can time everything correctly, eat well, take your prenatal vitamin, and still not get pregnant.
That doesn't mean those things don't matter. It means you cannot control every biological variable.
We want our patients to focus on the things they can influence while getting appropriate medical support for the things that need further investigation.

Where Does Acupuncture Fit Into Fertility Care?
Acupuncture is one part of traditional Chinese medicine, and it's something many people choose to include in their fertility care.
At Acupuncture Northwest, our approach is individualized. We want to understand your menstrual cycle, your overall health, your sleep, digestion, stress levels, and any fertility testing or treatments you're undergoing.
We also want to know how you're doing emotionally. Because the experience of trying to conceive matters, too.
Acupuncture can provide dedicated time for rest and supportive care during a process that often feels overwhelming. Some patients find their appointments relaxing and appreciate having a consistent place to talk through what they're experiencing.
It's important to be clear about what acupuncture can and cannot do. Research on acupuncture and fertility outcomes has produced mixed findings, and acupuncture around embryo transfer has not been shown to reliably improve IVF live-birth rates.
We don't believe in promising results that no practitioner can guarantee.
Instead, we see acupuncture as a complementary part of care that can be considered alongside appropriate fertility testing, reproductive medicine, and attention to your overall health.Supporting Fertility with Acupuncture
Acupuncture offers a natural and non-invasive approach to enhancing fertility. Studies have shown that acupuncture can improve ovarian function, regulate menstrual cycles, and increase the chances of successful implantation during assisted reproductive treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Additionally, acupuncture can help reduce stress levels, which is essential for optimal reproductive health.
One of the key ways acupuncture supports fertility is by promoting blood flow to the reproductive organs. Improved blood circulation to the uterus and ovaries can enhance follicle development, support endometrial lining growth, and facilitate embryo implantation. Acupuncture may also help regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, which controls the menstrual cycle and ovulation.
Furthermore, acupuncture can help reduce the side effects of fertility medications and enhance their effectiveness. For women undergoing assisted reproductive treatments like IVF, acupuncture before and after embryo transfer has been shown to improve pregnancy rates and increase live birth rates.
What About Acupuncture During IUI or IVF?
If you're undergoing IUI or IVF, you already have a lot to keep track of. Medication schedules, monitoring appointments, procedures, and the emotional roller coaster of waiting for results can make the process feel like a full-time job.
You don't need another practitioner adding pressure.
Our goal is to understand your treatment plan and offer supportive care that fits around it.
We encourage communication with your reproductive endocrinologist, especially when you're considering supplements or Chinese herbs. Herbal products can interact with medications or pose risks during fertility treatment and early pregnancy, so they should never be added without an appropriate safety review.
And if you're preparing for an embryo transfer, please know that acupuncture isn't a requirement for a successful IVF cycle. You haven't missed your chance because you didn't schedule a particular treatment.
You deserve to make informed choices about the care you receive
Nutrition Matters, Too
One of the first things I like to discuss with patients is food.
Not because there's a magical fertility diet that guarantees pregnancy. There isn't.
But nutrition is a meaningful part of preconception health, and it's often an area where we can make practical improvements without turning someone's life upside down.
Are you eating enough? Are you getting regular meals with protein, healthy fats, and a variety of nutrient-rich foods? Are you taking an appropriate prenatal supplement? Are there health concerns that warrant additional nutritional guidance?
These are useful questions.
We don't want you terrified of every food you eat or convinced that one imperfect meal will ruin your chances.
We want you to feel nourished, informed, and confident about the habits that are worth your attention.
Your Mindset Matters, but You Don't Need to “Just Relax”
Can we please retire that phrase?
When someone has been trying to conceive for months or years, telling them to relax is rarely helpful.
Stress does not mean you've caused your fertility challenges, and you don't need to achieve perfect emotional calm to become pregnant.
But your emotional well-being absolutely deserves attention.
The two-week wait can feel endless. A negative test can be heartbreaking. Pregnancy announcements can bring up complicated feelings, even when you're genuinely happy for someone else.
We want you to have a place where you can acknowledge all of that without feeling judged.
Sometimes the most meaningful support is helping someone feel less alone, understand their options, and stop blaming themselves for every unsuccessful cycle.
When Should You Seek Fertility Testing?
If you've been trying for a while, it's important not to assume that more supplements, lifestyle changes, or acupuncture appointments are the answer.
In general, fertility evaluation is recommended after 12 months of trying if you're under 35, after six months if you're 35 or older, and more promptly if you're over 40 or have known fertility concerns.
An evaluation may include ovulation assessment, reproductive anatomy, and sperm health. Fertility is not solely the responsibility of the person trying to become pregnant.
Getting answers is not giving up on a natural approach. It's making an informed decision about your health.
And acupuncture, if you choose it, can be part of your supportive care while you work with your medical team.
You Don't Have to Do Everything. You Need a Thoughtful Plan.
One of the hardest parts of trying to conceive is feeling like you should be doing more.
More tracking. More supplements. More research. More appointments.
But doing more isn't automatically doing better.
What matters is understanding your situation and focusing on steps that are appropriate for you.
After more than 20 years in practice, I know how much patients appreciate having someone take the time to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and help them make sense of their options.
That's the kind of care we believe in at Acupuncture Northwest.
You can be proactive without becoming consumed by the process. You can take meaningful steps without doing everything perfectly. And you can have a life while you're trying to create one.
